I was taught the one called American Style means you are done and the server can take you plate away. If your knife is across the plate in the upper righthand side of the plate you are still working on it and it is the proper place to rest the knife when not using it. It isn't rested on the rim on the plate with the handle on the table. Of course most of us don't eat that formally so all rules are up for grabs.
