Starting Issue

My Excursion is having trouble starting. It cranks fine but does not want to start running. I don't think it is the idle servo because I held the accelerator open just a little with no improvement. I got it started after a few cranks and we went to Walmart. After sitting about 20 mins we came back and it would not start. It tried to run on a few cylinders and would quit when I hit the gas. It eventually started and ran fine on the way home. Once all the candles are lit, it runs fine. I am getting no CEL light. Any ideas? I don't consider it safe to drive the way it is. This has been getting worse and worse.

First thing I would do is check fuel pressure.

I bought a fuel pressure tester not long ago. I guess it will have to wait till I get my Ranger back together. I hope another vehicle does not die on me. I am running out of spare vehicles.

Ok Ranger is dead so I got some time to work on the Excursion. It appears I am getting no fuel pressure. I pulled the relay and swapped it out with one just like it and no change. There is no noise when turning on the ignition switch. What else could be in series with the power to the pump other than the inertial fuel shutoff switch? Is there a hole in the rear floor that gives me access to pump wires so I can verify if it is getting power to the pump? How much of a pain is it to replace the pump. I think the tank has a good bit of fuel left in it.

so I can verify if it is getting power to the pump?
Get access to the connector at the inertia switch. Check the pink/black wire for power for 2-3 seconds at initial key-on (only). That will tell you if the electronics are working up to that point.

Is the inertial switch the last thing before the pump?

Tap the fuel tank with a rubber mallet a couple times. Your fuel pump may be out.

I got it running last night. It got warmer and it seems to be temperature related. When it gets below about 45F it starts acting up. I think it is still the fuel pump. The pressure was about 30psi when it got started.

Well I drove it to work today despite the risk. I need to burn over half a tank of gas. It is finicky but once it starts it runs fine. I may consider monitoring the voltage to the pump just to make sure it is the pump and not some relay. Does the pump shut itself off when the pressure reaches an certain value or is the pump turned on and off externally according to demand?

On a 2000, the pump runs continuously once the engine has started.

The pressure was about 30psi when it got started.
That's pretty dismal, you should have another 10 PSI or so for optimal starting. You might try two or three pump priming cycles before trying to start and see if it builds up more.

Also, pull the vacuum line of the fuel pressure regulator and see if there's any fuel in the line. Also verify engine vacuum is present (engine must be running).

Going to put a new pump in it. Got the new one in today. Don't see why the motor can't be replaced separately. I think it is even available as a separate part from Rock Auto.

Ok the new pump is in. It appears to be working fine. I will find out for sure this week because we are due for some cold weather and that is when it would not start with the old pump. The old pump was the original 2000 model pump. I just hope the new one lasts that long (made in Mexico).
