when using 4x4 on my 95 F-150 at highway speeds 45-55 mph it works and sounds fine while on the gas...but when i let off the gas and coast a horrible grinding type of noise comes from the front end...i'm fairly sure it's not the hubs since it did it with the auto hubs and two weeks ago i swapped them out for warn premiums. Any ideas would be appriciated.
It could possibly be the u-joints, I’m thinking about the ones in the front drive shaft. I’ll bet you already replaced them, but it’s a possibility,
It could also be the front axel u-joints, there are three of them buggers, I can’t think of any thing else.
I’ve also heard of it happening after the conversion to manual hubs in some situations, but dot remember why.
i actually haven't replaced the front u-joint...that was going to be my next idea. It did it before the manual hubs too. so i'm pretty sure it wasn't the conversion.
Well now i'm really mad. It has started to do it in 2 hi. when coasting off a highway onto off ramps and such. Its not nearly as loud as in 4wd, but none the less, its still there. I'm going to check the transfer case tommorow, i did replace the seals on it not too long ago, but i'm fairly sure i filled it correctly and its not leaking. Well, thanks for anymore ideas.
well here is another idea it might be in the trans itself now that it is coming while in 2wd the extra pull of 4x4 could have started your awareness and as the problem has gotten worse as it always does it has gotten to the point that 2wd is enough drag on it. just trowing ideas out.
