Pull The Trigger? Lifted Ex

Hey guys. I was browsing the internet and saw an excursion at a nearby dealership. My heart started to race because it was nearly exactly what I wanted: 2002 Excursion XLT 4x4 5.4 with only 111k miles. The only problem was there was no pic. So I drove to the dealership after hours and checked it out. The ad was a little off because it was actually an Eddie Bauer and not an XLT. No worries, EB is my 2nd pick. But there was one other problem: it had a good 6" lift and 37" tires. It was a monster. I like lifted trucks and all but the 5.4 isn't exactly a go-getter in stock form. I had an F-150 with nearly the same set up and it was a dog and a half (stock gears to boot).

The Ex still looks nice. Drivers seat is tore and the front tires wore wrong. I could always either remove the lift or regear it. Both not cheap options though. I'm on the fence about it. I have a New F-150 as my DD so this would be my salty road and snowy day truck. But if it got >8 mpg it's gonna suck to drive even occasionally. What do u guys think? Hold off for a no lift version (still very hard to come by) or build this one to suit

Hi Elco - I would at least test drive it. It may have gears already. You can also get a feel of the steering and suspension. I assume it is level so no rear sag.
Be very sure you can deal with low power-to -weight from the V8. There is no economical fix.
Let us know how you do.

Thanks for the quick reply Pastor! Yea I'll have to at least drive it. I dunno anything about it's past so if it's already geared low it'd be a big selling point. I'm not too worried about power to weight since my DD is a Tremor. I can get my fill of tire smoke before switching to the Excursion lol

I would never buy a 5.4 EX, but that's based on how I use ours.

I agree with we3z. I still cant believe they offered a 5.4 in such a large vehicle. Makes no sense to me.

for a run around it would be fine, It's easy enough to swap to more reasonable springs with say 33s or even less if you choose. It won't win any races but it'll get the job done!

What MPG are you EXpecting ?? How are you going to build to suit ?? What is the asking price ?? Is a XLT your 1st choice ??

Instead of a 5.4 Ex, I'd buy an old VW microbus. You'd have the same acceleration, but at least you'd get good mileage and have some resale value...

Thanks for the idea! So the lift on these is all spring? I don't have to run around looking for modified parts to drop it down to a more reasonable height?

I was hoping for 8-9 mpg. Id build to suit (if left with the lift and tires) with some super low gears to help the ol 5.4 out, assuming the gears are stock. Plus some other odds and ends. Asking price is high because its at a dealership. And yes, XLT is my first choice, but Eddie Bauer is 2nd

I had the opportunity to buy an early 2000s VW bus for $900. I turned it down when I saw there rated for 14/18 mpg. Before anyone says "Why complain about 18 when your gonna get 8", you expect a little better out of something so small. I have low expectations for fuel mileage for this Ex so Im ok with it

And $900 doesn't sound like much resale value to me...

If you're in it $900, if it runs, you'll ALWAYS be able to get 900 out of it, and probably sell it quick.
For a high priced 5.4 EX, the odds of getting your money back out of it is NIL. The odds of someone else wanting an overpriced, modified slug is low, so you'll sit on it forever.
The only way 5.4's sell around here is priced low enough that someone can swap in a real powerplant.

Besides, I was talking Microbus- not Transgender Van or VanaGoon, whatever those things are called!

You know all this, and you still have to ask the question?
Maybe someone will blow smoke up your kilt and tell ya to go for it, but they're not your friend...

Haven't got a PM

I made the mistake of asking for opinions I suppose. Thanks Pastor and Alaskan for helping!
