What are your plans for the truck? If your gonna lift it and put 37's, as well as tune it, then the tranny will eventually go out. If you are just buying to do a little towing and haul the family around I think you will be fine.
This^^^ Don't dicker too much about the price, you'll forget about that in the long run.
My 02 7.3 Excursion has been the best vehicle Ive ever owned, by far. Bought it with 99k 5 years ago, now has 185k, and it has been absolutely stellar. I swear by this thing. Only repairs I've had to do is replace o ring in the non-serviceable plug in the HPOP because of an oil leak that was slowing getting worse. and replaced the alternator twice, because I used cheap ones. Many miles towing a 16 ft car hauler all over the south. Flush tranny and coolant every 30k and run synthetic oil. Also run biodiesel or Diesel Kleen to keep the injectors happy.
These things were overbuilt, but not over-engineered. Im a Toyota Land Cruiser fanatic, (own two of them) and believe them to be about the best, but a 7.3 Excursion might be the toughest SUV ever built.
My 7.3L Excursion is one of my favorite vehicles I have owned. I have repaired a lot of things the previous owner neglected and kept up with the regular maintenance.
Last spring, I paid $6500 for mine with a little over 200k which had a new transmission and I have put well over $3000 into parts alone. It drives and tows amazingly well. The only thing I can't fix is the rust.
If I could find one with similar miles, was as mechanically sound as mine, AND rust free, I would not hesitate to pay $11k-$13k.
It looks like a reasonable deal to me- I'd run a Carfax or similar for some peace of mind...
BTW, I believe the coolant should be gold colored for that year.
Thats roughly the time line for preventative service such as, Injector O rings, oil cooler O rings and seals, turbo pedestal O rings, and sometimes ebpv. If you dont know your way around a 7.3 I will strongly suggest reconsidering a gasser, because with that mileage your going to have to put your hands on that engine regardless of maintance, not trying to lead you away from a 7.3 X but reconsider your purchase. Good Luck
