Good point stang. Over the years I have gotten frustrated with folks who don't post their location. I don't want to be rude to them about it, but if they post the location it helps a lot when you're trying to help them.

I too would try to help someone close by.

Grind down the weld.
Brush it with a wire brush
Sand it down with 80 grit
Sand it down again with 220 grit, then 320 grit, then 400 grit
Prime the area and then sand down the primer.
Paint the area

I want to make sure I prep the area well after I weld it. let me know your thoughts...thanks for your advice
Generally a weld will need some smoothing. After grind and wire brush, apply filler. For the first fill coat I prefer waterproof filler like metal to metal or JB weld. Sand with 80 grit and apply additional filler as needed and sand again with 80 grit. Then prime first coat and sand with the finer grits. Usually it takes a few coats of primer + sanding to get it really smooth. Save the 400 grit for the last coat.

THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO DO THE JOB PERIOD!!!!!!!!! Some of these responses are completely incorrect. Ive been in the Autobody and fabrication business over 35 yrs and have made a great living at it. NEVER fill any hole no matter what size with body filler, PERIOD!!!!

so after i weld them, I do the following....

grind down to a level slightly higher than the body
sand down with 80 grit
spray on primer
sand down again with 80 grit, then 120 grit, then 220 grit, then 400 grit

I want to make sure I follow the right steps after the weld... let me know if this it the right process if you get a chance...thanks

Where are you getting this from?
1 weld shut
2 grind close to flush with hard disk grinder
3 finish grinding with 40 grit floppy disc
4 DA with 150-180 grit and feather it out.
5 prim (may need a little spot putty)
6 sand with 320-400
7 Paint it.

Just came across my "lead paddle" from the 50's. Can you still buy 60-40 stick lead?
