My dad has a 78 F250 XLT, he doesn't want to sell it, so he wants it brought up to more modern standards. I first of all, need to know what I'm dealing with.
According to the build sheet, he truck is a F225 155 CUST STYLESD SUPERCAB
The rear end code reads 22E
Here are the real questions:
AXLE FRONT 3850 LB
SPRINGS FRONT - HD
SPRINGS - REAR AUXILIARY
SPRINGS - REAR 2250 LB
Now, when I load this truck with a load of dirt, it squats down real bad, its got Cooper Discoverer Radiat LT's on the back, so I feel a lot of it isn't the tires. Is this a "heavy duty" suspension by todays standards? Also, the scale weight is listed as 4354, and the GVW as 6550. I have taken this truck to the dump to have it weighed before, it weighs about 5800 empty. Is there something I am missing here? Thanks.
I am just trying to figure out this jumbled mess. I have the manufacturer GVW at 6550, and a tare weight of 4354. What I don't understand is that these figures don't look right. I have stripped the truck down before and weighed it, and it didn't weigh no 4354 lbs, more like 5600 at best. I am just wondering which one to go by. Does this mean the truck will only take like 900 lbs of cargo? The reason I am asking is that the truck acts more like a half-ton as far as cargo-carrying is concerned. Throw a little dirt in it, and it really starts to sag. Matter of fact, it squats more than other 3/4 ton trucks with a similar load.
I was unable to check the one on the frame, the rest - including the owner card, both the metal plate and the tag on the door/under striker bolt, and the registration - all match. The door is the original, so it doesn't look like that has been replaced.
I am puzzled by this truck. I am just trying to understand the truck better. The original owner built the truck to haul his Airstream trailer around the country, but why he put a 3:07 rear end in is just baffling me. I am wondering if an Airstream could have worn the back springs out so they don't function as they should. The leaves don't appear to be cracked or anything, it just seems like they give too much. Does this sound like normal wear and tear, or could there be failure in one of the components?
