I have a 2001 ranget xlt w/ the 3.0l v6.
I am having some trouble with my transmission.
It seems to be holding lower gears to long and making abrubt shifts. any idea what this could be?
had same problem? does the speedo jump from 0 to about 20, and or do you have rear ABS. My truck did the same thing it was a bad diff ABS/speed sensor.
I took it to AAMCO, and they told me that it ran a whole bunch of codes, and it needed to be rebuilt. They tried to do it for $1400-$2100. When I asked what the problem was they said they didn't know, they would find out when they took it apart. I think that was bull. Scanners run codes that TELL YOU where and what the problem is, that's why they exist. We serviced the transmission. My dad says that it is "sliding" when it shifts. My Dad hooked up a Snap-on scanner and it ran NOT ONE code. So we think either they were lying or they had a really expensive scanner similar to what a dealer has. I have recently noticed that it seems that it sticks in 2nd before shifting to 3rd around 40mph. Could be 3rd though I am not really sure. I haven't noticed any problems with the speedo, but I'll suggest the ABS sensor on my next service in a week or two. Thanks.
If it's a 2001, then surely you don't have that many miles on it. It shouldn't need rebuilding unless you drive like a maniac.
If I'm not mistaken, 2001 was the debut of "addaptive shift technology" on Rangers with the 5R55E transmission. This is a software program that is supposed to "learn" your driving habits and adjust the transmission shift points accordingly. Sounds to me like your computer and/or software is screwed up. I'd take it to a Ford dealership you trust and see if they can maybe reprogram it or something.
Thanks, that sounds like a more reasonable explanation. My trans IS a 5r55e, or it at least has a sticker on it that says that it should be serviced by the dealer or something to that effect. But actually I have 86,000 miles on it. I don't see how you could mess up a transmission, though even if you drove like a maniac. It's a weird problem. Thanks for the advice.
