I just put on a Luverne step bumper on ther rear of my 1988 F-150. It has dual exhaust pipes out the rear. I was thinking of getting a class III hitch that bolts to the bottom of the bumper only. The bumper has 3 holes six inches apart (12 inch total span between the outside holes) with the center hole being larger in diameter.
My question is --- has anyone used this sort of hitch, and where can I get one for my bumper. It would be real easy to bolt this on, then I can add 2 inch class III drops to the receiver, and change easily between 1 7/8 and 2". By avoiding a frame hitch I will not need to mess with the exhaust.
I know J.C. Whitney sells a 2" receiver that bolts under the step bumper. I considered it for my F150, but the bottom of the bumper was not flat and I felt it would not work without spacers which I thought would compromise its strenght. I finally gave in and got a full frame mount class three hitch after reading the truck owner's manual which indicates these devices severely reduce the load rating of the bumper and the use of them is considered abuse. Note that th bumper mounts with bolts that go horizontally and thus are subject to sheer stress. It just didn't look so good to me.
I have seen the type of hitch that you are talking about at Wal-Mart for less than $20, but I was concerned woth the strength of it also. But it will give you about he same load rating as a ball mounted to you step bumper.
