Is it possible that some excursions have had their odometer tampered with? I asked my mechanic he said no. That there is too much that tracks it on our trucks. I am curious. Really seems like every time i look on ebay the 7.3 diesel excursions all have 115k miles or less. Seriously at some point there can't be any of those left around. Don't people drive them? Aren't they supposed to travel in them?
Ive seen the cracks that plug in and change odometers on toyotas or something on youtube. Is this possible on our trucks?
Im not interested in doing this but my search on the forum didn't return any answers.
If you have the mechanical odometer its doable by anyone, ive seen it done before, if you have the electronic odometer, any computer tech can hack the cluster and put the miles you want, just look at the people that fix dash clusters, they always ask how many miles you have
It is a simple task, mechanical dash takes under an hour to mod and the digital dash just a few minutes. the only thing stopping somebody is a little bit of know how and their own integrity.
An easy and free way to verify a vehicles mileage is to run it through the carfax recall checker. https://www.mycarfax.com/landing/add-vehicle/lookup
After you enter the vehicle info go to the Emissions tab and it will have the mileage as recorded by a state certified smog station.
It can be done pretty easily, but it is also very easy to get caught here in pa. The mileage is recorded at every annual inspection / emissions certification and sent to the state. It is also written on the back of the inspection sticker.
If there was a roll back, I am sure that a warning is triggered that would start an investigation.

The records kept & available for you to search are the key.
Im not sure how you can actually "detect" fraud regarding mileage, but I think the pcm saves engine hours, but what is that good for
Your buying a vehicle thats been out of production for 11 years now, the best thing would be to check to see if its mechanical good, forget mileage ive seen low mileage engines that look worst than a 600k engine, (true story by the way)
Agreed. Just use common sense. If I was offered 2 trucks for 15k, Michaels with 900k miles on it or one that looks like Matts (After the flood) with 25K why the hell would I take the 7.3?!? Wait, we're talking about the ODO... Why would I take the one with less mileage in more questionable condition?
out of curiosity how do you check the hours on the motor. thats a good one id be very interested to do that. i was glad to check motor hours on my boat when i bought it!

Im not sure if is true or not but a tech tech told me it saves the hours on the actual pcm, dont take my word on it though
