So I'm curious. If they're year-specific, what exactly makes them year specific? I know that year-by-year the wiring changed a little bit. My guess would be that I could buy any year module, as long as I'm very careful to run the right wire to the right wire.

I'm also curious about this (now). Mine is a 75 but has the blue grommet module. I was going to order a new Motorcraft one as a backup, but it looks like mine should (according to the year) be a green grommet.
If I were you I would look for a NOS (new, old stock) one on ebay. I'm told the new ones from China are crapola, like the distributor p/u modules from China, good for 3 years, when the motorcraft ones lasted 40 years!

Maybe a late, late '75 model, assembled in early '76? The blue ones started in '76 and stayed up to the late '90s I believe.
If it works well, no problems with it, why worry about it?

My '77 still has it's OEM Motorcraft Ignition Control Module. I've had the truck since 35,xxx miles in 1986.
Some time maybe a year ago or more I was driving along and it just cut off like you killed the ignition .... but a few seconds later it was OK. I later found a fuel hose with a crack, replaced it, no more cutting off .... until this morning as I was on a slight down grade. Lights, all stayed on, radio stayed on, like you just cut ignition ..... but maybe 4-5 seconds later it come back.
Buddy at work says it's the ICM .... I went ahead and bought a BWD Select CBE-7 ICM as a back up just in case .... and then I remembered I had a spare that had been in the truck since the 1980s .... so I went out and got it. Haha .... it had leaked some of it's potting stuff out into the box ..... but I'm sure sit's still good. I'll try it to see ..... but I'll also keep the BWD as a newer backup.
