It's just me, I also chuckle when people call the intermediate axle on 6x6's the "front rear axle".
You brought up fond memories. We used to work not only with axle and vehicle manufacturers, but fleets with commercial, transit, specialty and military configurations. For our test reports and graphs I ended up rather then configuring to the customer's designation, but to S1, S2, ..... F1, F2, ..... D1, D2, ...... Or I'd just bail and call out A1, A2, A3 ..... Pick the Front-Rear in some of these.
There's some interesting brake testing and balance with these! Can you find S8 on the Russian MAZ? Not something I ever tested but it was a good example of axle configuration for a presentation I gave.
