Turn the OD off when driving in town under 35 MPH or when towing anything. Heavy loads may require that too.
Turning the OD off prevents the trans from shifting more often, decreases heat generated by the trans, and reduces wear and tear on your clutch linings.(bands). The OD gear ratio is not good for towing, Good for longer highway trips, unloaded or lighlty loaded.
If off-roading and constantly changing speeds, turn it off also.
I would not use it when in 4x4 mode either unless I'm crusing snow covered highways in 4high.
Check your owners manual, they have recommendations when and when not to use OD.
Hope this helps.

The owners manual will say to tow in overdrive, however if you go to the local tranny shop and ask the best tech in the building he will laugh at you and tell you to go ahead more money for him.
