Some of you guys may remember the sad end of my '80 due to city code pressure. My Toyota is toast now. It's a 94 with a cracked windshield and plenty of body damage. The 22re died from overheating. It would take over a grand to get it back on the road and the tags and inspection are both out.
Found an '86 styleside for $1000. Straight six and manual transmission. Haven't laid eyes on it yet....but advertised as running perfectly and street legal with clear title.
It's a good 50-60 miles away....and I'm pretty sure I'm going to grab it...so I don't want to drive that far twice. Trying to get a ride lined up to go get it tomorrow afternoon or Monday.
After I scrap the Toyota, I should only be into it for about $800....not having to rebuild and swap engines in the Toyota.............PRICELESS! Besides, it'll be nice to have a .real
full sized truck again!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!! I wish it were an 80.... because all the parts I have are for an 80...but a lot of them will work on this truck.
It is amazing what some people think is "good condition". Individuals are the worst, but even dealers do it. The best thing to do, as you are doing, is just to move on and wait for what you really want. Good luck!
Sounds like it was one of the many "runs great, rust free" POS trucks I looked at. Bunch of liars. None of them but one and the one I bought and currently own ran great and was not full of cancer.
Well...thankfully, I didn't drive an hour to look at the 82. Talked to the mechanic that was trying to get it running. The ad said runs and drives, needs carb. So the story was, it was running the carb was cleaned, but now it won't start. So I asked if it was primed did it run for a little while. "No, we tried that. Personally, I think it needs a carb and it's out of time, but even when we get it running, it's going to need work...it's leaking fluids."
I told him I really appreciated him saving me the 1 hour trip and we chatted awhile about how nice the sheetmetal and interior were.
Don't get me wrong, a different situation, I'd have given 1200 for it even not running.
So....the 80-86 dream is going on hold....maybe. Going to check out a 94....
My recommendation is to never pay more than scrap value for a vehicle that you can't test drive. That's because it is almost certain when you do get it running that there will be many more problems than the seller told you about. Been there, done that, and have the checkbook scars to remember it by.
Wound up hooking up with the guy with the 94 after all and bought it after we got it inspected. I'm at the DMV right now waiting to try to do a title transfer (the place is packed)!
