My 86 ranger has this setup. What it does is tell the computer to use a different idle strategy to control the idle depending on if the truck is in neutral and or the clutch is pushed in(no load on the engine) or the truck is in gear with the clutch out.

When it doesn't work(mine doesn't) you get finicky little issues like a hunting idle sometimes, and a jerky feeling to the engine when you hit the gas pedal quickly.

I found out later on they started using the speed sensor to decide what idle strategy to use and got rid of this switch circuit. Just one of the oddball things they did on the early fuel injected trucks.

If your tranny has been changed out, it may not have the switch. But you should have wire hanging around with a plug on the end. My ranger has a 5 speed, and the wire runs from the pass side up really high against the floorboard, and the switch is located right on top of the tranny near the shifter rubber boot. I can't even see it on mine, but can feel it with my hand. I am trying to remember, and want to say they bundled the wire with the oxygen sensor wires.
