Cleaning

What kind of solvent and cloth do I use to clean and engine block deck

I like carb cleaner, after it has been scraped clean.

Any cloth rag. Blow dry.

Auto parts stores have a spray-on gasket remover that works pretty well (though nothing I know of removes old silicone sealant) and lessens the amount of scraping needed, thus reduces chances of gouging.

Permatex also makes a foaming gasket remover.

A quality scraper like this will greatly lessen the chances of gouging or scoring.



It has a carbide tip that is remarkably flat.

Kerosene is a pretty good solvent, acetone is a good degreaser.
