I just bought a 2006 6.0 F250. It has 95,000 miles on it. Previous owner was meticulous with the maintenance and put less than 15,000 miles per year on it. The engine is completely stock like it came from the factory. Previous owner told he me used full synthetic shell oil and changes the oil only every 15,000 miles, also said he changes fuel filters every 10K. I had a mechanic tell me I needed to bullet proof the motor if I want it to last. This is my first time owning a Diesel and I'm trying to educate myself on how to take care of this very finicky 6.0 motor. Since I've had the truck it runs fine, seems like everything is normal cranks right up, no smoke. No Check engine lights on. Only thing I noticed after driving the other day was coolant level was about halfway below MIN. I'm just wondering why the mechanic wants me to spend 3500+ on parts which seem to be fine. Any info I could use about this motor will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
15000 mile oil change intervals is NOT meticulous maintenance.
Yes that seemed a little long to me also. He said he barely ever drove so he changed the oil once a year never did any hauling or anything with it. I plan on changing it ever 5K
Lots of reading in the tech folder. First thing to do is buy yourself a good code/data reading device like a Scan Gauge 2 or the Torque App. Get a good baseline reading from the truck and go from there.
After the monitoring device, I'd consider a blue spring kit for the fuel reassure regulator unless you know it's been done already. Coolant level fluctuates a lot on these trucks, check it cold, a TSB changed the recommended level from the full mark (made into the tank) to the add mark. Some trucks got a sticker on the tank with the new full/add levels.
Unless you know it's been done, I'd service everything. Oil change, transmission fluid/filter, cooling system etc.
Congrats on the new to you truck and welcome to FTE.
