I know there are a lot of engine i.d. questions but hear me out. I've always thought there was something fishy about my 302 in my '78 f-150. The valve cover says '78 302 but I don't know how to confirm actual displacment without tearing the engine apart. If anyone can help me, please do. Anyway, I took the casting numbers off the block and they are: c5ae-6015e. Thats easy; 1965 galaxie? I have a smallblock out of a 1965 galaxie in my 1978 truck? It runs really good. It is very clean. But I am still at a loss as how to confirm cid without disassembly. If any of this makes sense, help me!

an easy way to check between a 302 and a 351w is to measure the intake, if its around 9" its a 302 or 289 if its over 10 its probably a 351w hope that helps

I've just realized the firing order differences of the 302 and 351. I didn't know all 351s had the same firing order. I thought the windsor family all had the same firing order. So ,I do know I have a 302- out of a 1965 GALAXIE! Is that wierd or is it just me?

I could be wrong (most likely) but I believe the 302 came out in '67. Sounds like you have a 289.

These were the engines for the 64 1/2 - 65 Mustang
170 cubic inch 6cyl 1bbl "V"
260 cubic inch 8cyl 2bbl "F"
289 cubic inch 8cyl 4bbl "D"
*289 cubic inch 8cyl 4bbl "K"
* Available in June of 1964

that explains a lot of the tuning ploblems i've had using the books. i gave up on that and just made adjustments until it ran like i wanted it. it has all the '78 electronics on it and i assume the smallblock design didn't change much over the 18 year difference because i replaced basically everything hanging on the engine with 1978 302 replacements. any comments on that?

The 289/302 share most parts as it's basically the same motor externally.
