I recently bought a 99 F150 2 wheel drive with the 4.2 V6 and a 5 spd manual transmission. I have only had the truck for about a week and so far the V6 has performed much better than I expected it to, and I'm pretty happy with it. When I test drove the truck I noticed it had a whine in the rear end, when I asked about it the guy that had the truck said that he had checked around about getting the rearend fixed and was told that this was the nature of the beast for this type of Ford truck and although they could put a new rearend in it and stop the whine, it would most likely return pretty quickly even in the new rearend. I made a pretty good deal on the truck so I didn't let it stop me but I was wondering if anyone else had noticed the same thing. The truck has 72000 miles on it and it is a shortbed regular cab truck.
Thanks for your help
I am hearing what you are and I made a few comments about it also. Check out my post further up. I would suggest getting a certified mechanic to at least pull the rear cover plate off and look at the alignment of the ring and pinion gears. I don't think mine were aligned right from the factory and ended up replacing them after the warranty ran out. Good luck.
I just read on another site that this has been a problem with the limited slip differentials and they suggested changing the fluid and adding a friction modifer to it. Any thoughts?
The limited slip noise usually only happens around tight corners at low speeds. Gear noise usually happens when either accelerating or decellerating. Bearing noise can be when accelerating or decellerating but can also be constant depending on which bearing is shot.
