That's actually a pretty nifty idea about the barn doors. I guess the only drawback to doing that is there is nothing to keep them open if the vehicle is on a slope or if the wind blows. But still a good idea!
Also, thanks for the idea about the armrests. I saw that post yesterday about flipping them, looks real good and I didn't even think about it.
Now I only have to buy a new seat bottom for the driver's side.
Thanks for the warm welcome! Having a new vehicle to mod to my liking is pretty exciting. I bought this in order to tow my new (to me) 33' travel trailer. . We were driving a 2005 Sequoia. I love Toyotas, but was raised on Fords, and since Toyota didn't have anything in my price range for towing 7-8k lbs, I reverted to my childhood! My dad currently drives a 97 F250 extracab with a 7.3, which we used to bring the trailer home from the dealer. I drove it and was immediately impressed with the way it drug that beast down the road. Before I got home I had already made up my mind to look for a diesel. In addition to all this, we have 4 kids, and as all of you know, there's only one rig that can handle 10k lbs and carry 6 people in total comfort, and that's the X!! I found this one in Austin Texas and it lived most of it's life in Cali, so the body doesn't have any cancer. Before I bought it I gladly paid a used car inspector $160 to go over the entire vehicle and let me know what kind of shape it was in. No way I was buying a diesel without somebody looking at it that actually knew what they were looking at! Anyway, looking forward to learning a bunch of good stuff from you guys about these trucks.
We did the same thing you did. Have 4 kids as well and was towing a 27 ft 6k trailer with our Expedition. We loved the Expedition but not for our towing situation. Picked up our Excursion just about a month ago. The guys here really helped us out. Towed first time on a 6 hour trip each way the week after we got it and it was awesome.

I also did the armrest trick! Really wish I remembered who posted it first so I could rep them!

Look on ebay. I got mine from a place in Texas that has a bunch of items listed regularly.

It takes one second to pop it off allowing the door to open fully. Don't leave it popped off, only do it when you need to open the doors more than the hinge attachment allows.
Did a few things to the X today...
Installed my new 08 mirrors! Man, these things are awesome! Got them off ebay for $155 for both, brand new. They look great with no wrinkles like I have heard about some of the ones from amazon. Didn't get a chance to hook up the running light on them yet, I will wait until the weather is a little warmer for that job. Plugged right up and worked properly. I did get a little over-zealous and broke a nut off one bolt on the driver's side, but it doesn't seem to have affected how sturdy they are. Also changed the bulbs on my driver's side running boards. The plugs are a little corroded and the rear one had some fresh water in it that I dumped out. Then I let it air dry a while before plugging the new bulb in.
This was one of the mirror boxes.
Mirror packed in nicely.
Notice the rectangular plug to match the factory plug. Also notice another pigtail that came in the box...I guess that is for an older model X?
Also, I took some pictures of my rear spring pack. I'm not sure if this factory. Looks like an add a leaf with some rubber bushings attached. Anybody seen these before?
Front side of right rear spring pack.
Rear view of right rear. Notice the overload rubber springs.
Yes, it looks like everything is factory stock on the rear suspension. Most of the stock EXs have chewed that front rubber snubber away by now, yours still looks pretty good, your Ex must have lead an easy life!
