strange starter situation

We managed to get 830 miles from home with a strange occurrence at every fuel stop - the first turn of the key sounds like the battery can't manage. Sometimes even the second. By the third try it's like a fresh battery. The engine's off for 5-15 minutes. My guess is a poor connection somewhere but it's almost like ignition timing goes way advanced then settles back where it should be. We don't drive the van often so I don't have a lot of stored memory but it seems the volt gauge reads a tick or two higher on this trip than previously.

Clean the battery terminals first.

What he said.
For me, weird starting issues have always been one of the terminals being corroded/dirty/not fully tight.

While you're cleaning terminals don't forget the one on the actual starter too---I've had those fall off, barely held on just by the bridge of corrosion from long term exposure to the elements and water constantly thrown up from the road.
