anyone ever actually baught one of those autozone/advance/o'rileys reman'd engines? any luck with them? input appreciated as always. the idea sounds good. I did find some worrying stuff on BBB for one manufactuer, but i figure 15 complaints out of who knows how many cant be that bad. right?
The problem with most parts store reman'd engines is the rebuilders are going to do as little as possible on the rebuilds. They want to rebuild the engines as cheaply as possible. This makes the rebuilders the most profit.
This leads to them reusing some parts that most people would replace during a rebuild.
If you've got a vehicle that is broke down and you are in a hurry to get it back on the road, then sure. But the "new" engines longevity might not be the best.
Depends how much of hurry you're in, and whether you like to gamble or not. You may get a "bad one", it happens. Nobody is going to take the time or attention to detail as an FTE member would. For example weight tolerance on pistons and rod assemblies. Even within the factory spec tolerance some might be on the high side, and some on the low side.
If I have the history of the original; i.e., basically that it has not been abused, then I prefer to have it rebuilt by a reputable shop, that includes an extended warranty, anything less than a year, IMO, it's not worth the time and labor. I found having an engine rebuilt can cost more.
For reasons mentioned, not a particular fan of store bought crated engines, imagine similar to purchasing a starter, if it don't work, no loss just exchange. As last resort I would inquire into stores rebuild shop and check on their customer standing?
Found myself in a bind and needed a replacement engine quick, rather than purchase thru an auto parts store where the shop is affiliated with a chain auto parts store, I researched and located an independent and reputable rebuild shop, out of state, and according to customer reviews, had high marks. They offered a 7 year warranty on a long block replacement engine, delivered, and at a very reasonable price?
