Question rear main seal replace

I posted a message about replacing clutch in 69 F100 - 360

Should I replace rear main seal?

One mechanic said it was rope seal and do not attempt unless pouring oil

Parts house said they had a rubber replacement and it was NO PROBLEM once old one was dug out.

Any Suggestions??

Thanks,
Richard

Unless it's leaking I would not. When it is leaking bad, it isn't really that big of a job.

thanks,
I am replacing the clutch anyway.

I am confused whether I can slide on the new rubber seal or if I must use the rope stuff??

No you dont have to use the rope, Im not even sure that they still make the roap anymore the rubber seal is the way to go but if you can get away without replacing it your better off. Unless it is leaking to the point it is getting oil all over your clutch then i would try it but you might have just as bad of a leak when you get done just from the fact that you really dont have the room to work under the truck that you would have if the motor was on an engine stand. Some of the others guys on here can correct me if im wrong.

Why do you want to replace it? The rope seal is a real bear to get out without tearing down the engine on a stand.

rear main seal replace

Thanks folks,

I am just in the habit of replacing normal maintenance items when I have things torn apart so I can get to them without another disassembly later..

This sounds like one to LEAVE ALONE.

I thoought it would be pop old one out, tap the new one in.

Heard from the clutch thread that dropping the oil pan required removing the oil pump and possibly jacking up the engine.

I will not replace the rear seal unless leaking.

Thanks to all.
Wish me luck over the weekend
