Cyl 2 Misfire, But Engine Smooths When Code is Cleared
I'm trying to help a friend with his 2008 F250 6.4 Powerstroke. It has an intermittent misfire. The day we started it, it ran smooth for the first few minutes, then it started to clatter and smoke badly and the CEL came on. We hooked up the autoenginuity and it showed a cylinder 2 misfire. When we cleared the code the engine smoothed out, quieted down and the smoke stopped. After a few more minutes, the same thing happened and again, clearing the code smoothed it out. I don't know what's causing the misfire, I assume a bad injector. But, is it normal for a code to cause the engine to run badly and for clearing it to make it run better?
how many miles...becareful with bad injectors...a run away injector could melt a piston....I would send the friend to a ford dealership and have the truck towed there.....your going to look pretty bad if as a result of clear the codes and driving the truck...he melts a piston...respectfully submitted for consideration.

200,000. He already took it to the Ford dealer because it was intermittently missing and smoking. They said it was a cracked piston and they pulled the head. There was some cylinder wear, but of course, there was no cracked piston. Not sure why they would think an intermittent miss would be a cracked piston??? Didn't stop them from charging $1500. So instead of paying another $2500 for them to put it back together, I did it for him. I don't think he's interested in another expensive misdiagnosis.
