oil drain back valve
so to start, i checked my oil this last weekend and it appeared to be overfull. knowing i was having a injector problem i put the injector on the priority list. as my coolant level has not moved at all sense i got the truck. changed the injector Monday truck runs perfect now. changed the oil. next day checked the oil and it was over full. dang not good. i changed the oil with bulk oil (5-40 rotella) so i thought maybe i put too much in, also thought that the top of the dipstick tube may be whipping some oil on the top of the indicator making it look over full. drained about 2 1/16th quarts of oil out to right at the add line. marked the position of the tires on the concrete and the time after the engine was shut off to check the oil level (cant really do a good cold check as where i park at home is rather uneven)
I monitored the oil level all week with a very consistent check. oil level was rock solid did not move. then yesterday i deviated slightly rather than 5 mins after turning off the engine i stomped in my oil check position then got distracted. 2 hours passed by and i finally came back to the truck and checked the oil, it was up a qt half way between the lines on the dipstick. A quick moment of panic, followed by restarting the engine turning it off and re-checking after 5 mins. oil level was back to its exact normal position.
i have sense determined that the oil in the filter assemble is very slowly draining back into the crank case...
questions,
1) is it normal for the oil filter to drain back to the crankcase over a few hours time. (if no then additional questions)
2) should the oil filter hold its oil indefently
3) im running a aftermarket oil filter/cap the cap and filter packaged together never separated don't have the original cap. oil filter is the proper aftermarket for the truck and the right type for my standpipe. also after determining my oil filter is in fact draining back i replaced the oil filter with another brand of aftermarket filter and the symptoms are identical. can we rule out this being caused by the oil filter (yes i know i should be running the OE filter but i don't have the cap and will change back just don't want to do it right this moment.
4) do the drain back valves fail. visually inspected without removing looks ok and no dirt or debris in the filter assembly.
2) It should until you take the cap off and then drain itself
3) Put on an OEM cap and filter... big no no
4) They can and have, but I'd try an OEM filter and cap first.
It can be replaced... but because the filter possibly isn't working correctly now, you could do serious damage. Get an OEM cap and filter, go from there. The filter holds the drain back closed, to tall and its not closed... It's also not filtering correctly. Its also probably causing the slow starts in the morning? The low pressure oil pump needs to fill the filter cavity before it gets high pressure oil to run the truck.
3) your playing with fire... I wouldn't take a risk on a $10,000 motor because of a $50 filter and cap, that's just me.
Thanks
