Hey guys, my son has a 2007 F-150 4X4 Lariat Supercab with 20 inch wheels. He has the original Pirelli tires on it. LT275/55R20 I've been after him to get them off of there because they are way too old. Anyway, he doesn't have much time for research. He lives in SE Virginia. Most of the time, he is highway driving. However, this time of year, you can get snow in his area. So, he needs a good all purpose tire that can handle highway, some off road and snow. Price and wear are important, also. One thing he doesn't like about the Pirellis is that they seem to retain a flat spot in cold weather until a good 10 miles of driving. What do y'all recommend?
Thanks!
For me, their performance in snow has been nothing short of phenomenal. They also perform best if you stick to the OEM specified size. I think they are a great compromise between traction and tread life.
I've had many tires including the bfgs but by far my favorite all around tire so far is the Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx.. great blend of A/T and mud tire, have about 20k on them and they wear great, lots of tread left. Their pretty quiet on the road and work great off road and in the mud as well as having a very strong sidewall and good looking sidewall tread. Bfgs were quieter on road but not nearly as good off road. I've never heard of any complaints with Cooper they make a great product. I'm also a fan of bfg km2 for little more aggressive mud tire. And the new fuel gripper m/ts look great but can't find any reviews
The stock pirellis absolutely suck, imo. Two sets and each as bad as the other. They seem great for about 10 or 15k miles and go downhill fast. Get in any kind of snow after 20k miles and you're in for a real ride of a lifetime!
This third set I put on are michelin ltx m/s2. I'm about 20k in and they have plenty of tread...should get close to the 70k mileage warranty by the looks of things.
I live in PA, so we get some pretty good winters now and again. So far no complaints. Muddy dirt roads up at deer camp are a non issue. True offroading and thick mud, you'll wish for something more aggressive. Heavy rain? Awesome tire! Confident and stable at sane highway speeds.
They are technically a highway all season tire, and an LTX A/T2 is available as their all terrain option. Had they been at the shop, I may have gone that route, but when I'm honest with myself, the few times I'm off road hasn't been any issue whatsoever.
I think they look good, too. Let's be real, we all like our trucks to wear tough looking boots...the at2 probably look more aggressive, but I'm happy with my choice and I'll easily spring for them again next time around.
