My uncle beefed up a 351 cleveland for a sprint car and I would like to know how much it is worth. It was strapped onto the dyno at 485 rear wheel horsepower. I don't know what he has put into it, but he is giving it to me because he wants to see it go into a truck. He said he had it sold for $10,000 dollars but the guy didn't have the money, so he took it back. Do you think it is worth more or what?
I don't think its worth 10 grand, but then again I haven't rebuilt a lot of motors to high horsepower. I would venture to say that most of the stuff in that block is custom and it might be worth that much.
That's allot!
But building a Cleveland can get expensive. Been there, done that.
My guess is it might be to much for a street truck.
Reason is, that rig was probably built to maintain high RPM's.
Find out what kind of cam, intake, what RPM range it ran at, and what's been done to the heads. This will be a good start
Was that 485 at the rear wheels or flywheel?
If flywheel, then you have a hot street machine.
Rearwheel, depending on the trans. it might be rated for big RPM, meaning you have to run a steep gear to keep you in that sweet spot.
Will you be racing on a track or street fighting?
It is rear wheel, but that is in a different application. It is in a sprint car. He's going to give it to me. I want to build a sleeper truck that can smoke most cars. Simply street.
The block is original. It has a racing cam, custom pistons, four barrel carb (don't know cfm), performance intake, etc.
1 - What's custom about the pistons?
2 - Racing cam? ask him if he knows lift & duration, and about what RPM he rode it. Sprint cars ride allot different than you would on the street. Or just find out what RPM he rode it at.....
3 - Performance intake? Find out what kind. They also have a sweet spot range like cams (torque /or high RPM). And it is good to have everything comlament each other or it will run like *****.
Either way get it, thank him, and tell him he is the best.
Then pop off the valve covers and see if it has stud mounted rockers.
Remember, for some guys "race engine" could be anything.
Also check out www.fordmuscle.com the Tech forum has a bunch of Cleveland guys in there that love to help out.
My name over there is "slick mo fo", I had to change it for this site.
it may be a fine motor especialy for free, but (IN MY OPINION) it not worth 10 grand iin this or any other life time! for less than 10 grand you can buy a 500 inch big block strocker crate motor with over 600HP and its BRAND NEW! DW
