I'm a newbie on this section of FTE. I usually hang around the OBS powerstroke section. Anyways, I just bought a 1997 F-350 plow truck. It's got some rust issues, but all in all, not a bad truck. I noticed that the dipstick tube is rotted out. How easy is it to replace the tube in the truck? I certainly don't mind doing it, I just don't know how many swears I will be saying. Is there anywhere else to get a dipstick tube than Ford? I found a tube and dipstick on Ebay for around $80. Seems a little steep to me, but I'm not familiar with prices on gas stuff. Thanks in advance for any and all help.
I had mine out while I had the engine out but should not be too tough in the truck.
There is a small spring clip "keeper" holding the tube where it goes into the oil pan. The tube is held at the top by a nut on one of the exhaust manifold studs. Remove the clip, soak it with WD40, remove the nut from the stud. With a small pair of channel lock pliers gently twist and pull.
