Consider converting your truck to mass air. Finding anyone to list a kit for '85's or '86's is going to be fun, though. You may try Pro-M. I've got the Ford Racing '87 - '93 F-Series conversion kit on its way, which I will [hopefully] be fitting to my '85 Bronco with a couple of pin changes and an '87 airbox. You also * * * may * * * be able to obtain pinout diagrams from your '86 and, say, a '90 or so ECM and make the later model unit work in your truck with some pin changes. Then again, maybe not..... it's going to depend on how different the emissions systems may be, etc. The advantage? Ken may be able to burn a chip for the later ECM (and maybe not). Our earlier ECM's are apparently the Atari's of the EEC-IV evolution, and don't have a whole lot going for them as far as programmability. Consider how much you like EFI..... If you do, and/or have some investment in EFI parts, consider the mass air option. I realize there are a lot of *'s and "maybe's" in my post...... Not trying to frustrate you any further, but welcoming you to my world. I really can't say, for sure, that I have found a cure for the earlier EFI trucks until I actually receive my kit, and can make it work. It's about the best shot I see at making my 302 run as I planned and built it, though..... even with being careful with the mods, the speed density system still didn't like what I did.
well lets see how your conversion goes and then hopefully you can give more advise on what to do. I do like efi, much more dependable than carb. I was thinking the same thing about using a later model ecm, such as an 87 maybe. as far as i know egr, tps, map, ign module, ingectors, iac, act, coolent sensor, are the same. the difference are in the cyl heads, and the 87 up use 2 o2 sensors, and there some difference in the vacume soleniods. every thing else should be able to be reprogrammed as long as it is doable ecm. luckily i work for a parts store and can compare ecm pins side by side. but are all 87 ecm programmable?
