I have a 93 f-150 5.0 motor. 5 speed manual transmission. My brother and I dropped the transmission and replace the rear seal and clutch. After reconnecting the transmission bolts wires I put the stick shift back in the transmission inside the cab. The stick has play as if its in neutral. However it only allows me to select two gears. I can start the truck but as soon as I take my foot off the clutch the truck dies as if its in gear. But the stick shift has play as if it's a neutral and yet the truck dies and tries to roll forward as if its in gear.
When you took the shifter off, did you make sure to put it in neutral first?
It sounds like it was possibly in a gear when it was disassembled. If that's the case, you'll have to take the shifter off and align the forks by hand so that they are all in the neutral position, then reinstall the shifter.
