Can you help me pick a truck?
Hello everyone,
I've seen a few people get some great advice on here and so I thought I would try my hand. I live in the Yukon (Norton Canada) and have recently bought a property 15 minutes from town (paved highway). We need a second vehicle and have decided on a truck. It's my fist one, and the decision is mildly overwhelming. It will be used for a few things things:
1. Commuting to work - 3-4 days per week.
2. Miscellaneous truck stuff (dump runs, mountain biking, kayaking potentially hauling wood)
3. Camping- my wife and I would REALLY like to get a camper, preferably a camper that goes in the bed opposed to a trailer (I just find trailers unwieldily).
4. Off road driving- though we are not crazy. So long as it can handle logging roads we are good.
If at all possible I would like to go used- new trucks are incredibly expensive! At the moment I am considering a diesel f250, or s f150 with Eco boost. I am hoping to find something in the $30-40 k range.
Another option I found is a used f350 with 40k km for $36 k. But the 350 seems like a lot of truck...
Any thoughts that people have would be greatly appreciated!

I love my 350, but as a daily driver, it is nowhere near as comfortable or economical as the 150 EB. If your camper fits the 150, I'd have to believe you're better off with that. The 250 diesel seems to cost some folks real money for upkeep / maintenance.
Conclusion: 1 vote for the 150 EB.

Have you thought gas 250 or 350.
I love my 250. And people are racking up the miles on them. I would think its a better option for the bed camper, over ecoboost 150.
I daily my 250, and not as comfortable as the parents 150, I don't mind it. And if your going to have some weight, it gets comfortable.
I know bed campers range in weight and its always better to have more truck then not enough.

Leftover '15 SD trucks have $5k in rebates, and the F150s are right there with them. The SD selection is getting very slim and the '15s really haven't been in abundance, but both are out there. I wouldn't go used, because it's just so hard to find a genuine good deal on one. Unless you're looking for something fancy you could be able to get any reasonable gas SD or 150. I wouldn't think a diesel would do you any good on the value side of things. Even if your local dealer has to locate one for you, I'll be you can find a good deal you'll be happy with on new.

@OP: I think a 1/2 ton pickup will be a little light if you intend to get a slide-in camper of any substance. They get heavy quick, and a 3/4 or one ton truck will haul a camper MUCH more safely and comfortably.
Personally, I think your best value will be found in the used market. You can go for diesel or gas, but it sounds like gas will suit your needs just fine, as well as save money on maintenance and just general operation.
I'm not sure where you heard that, but Ford is most definitely not the only one with a 3/4 ton gas rig.
Chevrolet: 2016 Silverado 2500HD Heavy-Duty Work Trucks | Chevrolet offered with the 6.0L V8 Vortec or 6.6L V8 Duramax.
Ram: 2016 Ram 2500 Heavy Duty Work-Ready Truck offered with the 5.7L Hemi V8 or 6.7L Cummins
That said, I certainly think the Ford F-250 with the 6.2L V8 is top dog, but it's not the only one.

I vote for an F250 gasser.. Just make sure it has the TC springs and the 6.2L engine. I traded an F150 in to get the F250. You couldn't pay me to go back. I read somewhere that Ford is the only company producing a 3/4 ton gasser which is a shame, since it is such a great vehicle.

Thanks for the help everyone!
Am I to understand that the main Benifits of diesel is are longer lasting and better, more fuel efficient towing with the trade off of higher upfront costs and more Maintenace?
How do you think towing a trailer will compare to a slide in camper in terms of fuel economy with gas vs diesel? I don't care about a 1 mpg difference, but I have been told it could be more then that....
