I own a 56 F100 and have bought a Flat-O bellhousing Kit to install a C4 on my 292 Y Block. I mainly drive the 56 around town and cruise a bit on the interstate but won't be racing it.
I've got a couple of 1975 C4s that were behind 171 CI V6s. I've read that these were unique and had their own valve bodies but my question is can I rebuild them for my 292? I've read about adding clutches but am not sure how that is accomplished.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. OBTW the reason I'm asking about rebuilding the V6 C4s is I've only been able to locate pan fill V8 C4s and I need a case fill for the Flat-O bellhousing to fit.
Given the year who knows what has been done to it. A 1974 transmission is 40 years old. The only way of knowing is ripping it apart. Counting clutches. Shift kit may have been installed.
Still working on these V6 C4s. Opened them up and they have three lined plates each. I was told on another site I need 4 lined plates in each drum for a V8. One looks like it's been opened up before but one looks like it's never had anything done to it.
Direct clutches have: .066 Snap Rings, .225 Top Pressure Plates, 3@ .078 Steels & .075 Lined Plates. The lower pressure plate is one of the .078 steels.
Well after a bit of family time & waiting on parts I put it back together. I got .060 steels, .141 pressure plates and .066 snap rings. I've got 4 frictions in each now. Foward pack "dry" has .020 between the snap ring & pressure plate. But the Direct (High/Reverse) I can only get .035 again "dry". . Ford Specs call for .050-.070.
With only 4 frictions will the .035 be too tight? I did perform the oil mod and the #9 thrust washer mod. I also changed to AN #6 fittings and will run braided line to the radiator cooler.
