I had my clutch done in my 1991 f-150 4x4 4.9 5spd about two months ago, and all of a sudden I can hear this noise coming from the bellhousing area, kinda sounded like the flywheel just grazing a dust cover, and when you pushed the clutch in the noise would change slightly, but the clutch worked fine, so I took it back to the shop that did it, and 4 of their mechanics took turns listening to it with their stetha scope, and were convinced it was in the clutch area, so out came the transfer case and tranny, they looked at the clutch it looked perfect, but didn't want to put it back in so they ordered up a new clutch, put it all back together, and low and behold that b!tch still made the same noise, turned out to be the starter, I guess the bendix was going and it was leaving the starter gear hanging up on the flywheel just enough to get this sound, the sound would transfer into the flywheel, I know what your thinking what a bunch of meat heads, but they have a very good reputation, and they payed for it, just thought I'd share that, incase this happens to you
I had the same kind of noise in my brother's 65 Mustang, except it is an automatic!! The starter drive return spring was weak and when accelerating hard, it would "ring" from the bellhousing area. The drive moved back until it rubbed on the flexplate. It took quite awhile to find that noise.
