multiple light switch sizes?

I ordered a replacement light switch for my '65, got it today and went to install it, but it looks like the part that screws in from the front is smaller than the threaded hole in the new switch that it's supposed to screw into.

Anyone know which is correct for the '65?

Here's a picture I found online, the red arrow points to the shaft that on my truck is smaller than the threaded hole it goes into on the new switch.

Checked with the retailer and they claim that the switch should fit my truck.

Wondering if at some point a previous owner swapped the switch and shaft, or if I jsut got a bunk switch.

From what I can tell both 1965 and 1966 F100 and F250 all used either

C5TZ-11654-C (SW-718)

or interchangeably if you remove a couple of tiny spot welds on an extra bracket

C5TZ-11654-A (SW-439)

Both of these switches have a small spring loaded plunger in the bottom that retains the shaft and **** assembly. You don't screw the shaft into the switch, simply line it up and push it straight in. You don't necessarily have to depress the plunger to install the shaft and ****, only to remove it, but it doesn't hurt anything, either.

In either case of which switch above, the **** is black with a white center like the cigar lighter and heater and wiper controls.

The headlamp switch **** & shaft is a one piece assembly.

C3TZ-11661-D .. Headlamp Switch **** & Shaft Assembly - 3 3/16"long: 1963/66 F100/1100.
C1TF-11661-B .. Headlamp Switch **** & Shaft Assembly - 2 1/4"long: 1961/62 F100/1100.

DC shows this switch - you can see the extra bracket like SW-439 would have spot welded to it. Our trucks don't use that extra bracket from what I've seen.

The **** and shaft - their applications are wrong no matter what and I don't see anything in the picture to keep the shaft from sliding back out - where's the groove near the tip? Maybe just a bad pic. And how long is the shaft? I guess if it's the longer one it could be cut to length for the earlier year trucks.

Yes I understand how the switch is mounted. I'm not talking about the ****/plunger, I am referring to the threaded sleeve that the plunger goes through. This sleeve retains the switch in palce even when the plunger/**** is removed. You unscrew this sleeve with a big flathead.

The switch removed from my '65 did have that bracket.

When I said shaft in my previous posts, maybe I should have said sleeve. I think you misunderstood the part I am talking about. In the picture I posted, it it pointed to with a red arrow.

I'm beginning to think that maybe the switch/sleeve/**** assembly was replaced with a different switch from a different FoMoCo model. The new switch I received was supposed to fit every F100 up to the mid 70's.

OK, I'm with ya. I didn't realize the thing the red arrow is pointing to is the nut.

You probably need a nut like C3TZ-11650-A which is 5/8" O.D. x 1 3/16" long. That would have been the part number for the nut for 1965 and 1966 F100 and F250.

The above **** & shaft is C5ZZ-11661-B = 1965/66 Mustang.

The original 1965/66 F100/1100, 1965/66 Mustang, 1965 Falcon, 1969/72 Econoline. 1971/72 Mustang headlight switch was replaced by Ford in 1973 by: D3ZZ-11654-A .. Headlamp Switch Kit.

That wasn't my picture, just one of a Ford switch that looks similar. I found it online and added the arrow for reference.
