There is good advice above from the best Ford truck guys in the nation. Here is my take:
1) In present condition, the truck is worth about $1500-2000 in my area (Bay Area, CA), probably less where you are. You will avoid a ton of headaches by selling it.
2) These are about the simplest vehicles on the road. If you are willing, you can get manuals, tear into it, and consult us step-by-step. We will get you through, cheaply. You will have a vehicle worth more that your investment in money when you are done. And you will learn. We, here, know every screw, handle, wire and subsystem in our trucks and so shall you.
3) If you pay to have everything done, you will end up far in the hole dollarwise. That is an unfortunate fact with labor at $80-100 an hour.
Glad to hear you chose the path that you did. The 1/2 that doesn't understand kinda forced a time constraint on you but it's better all around for you. You got the manual? Way cool. Lock, Load, and Learn Buddy. With that manual and some decent tools (tell that 1/2 Santa's bingin' ya better ones IN A SET) you can do way more than you think. Notice my Signature. If you get stuck....we're here.
And I'm watchin' also. Hey Ozark, pass the popcorn will ya?
Well, I just got my truck back today. 360 was replaced with a 390 and got a rebuilt carb and a new radiator with it. It cost me some $$$$ but it runs great.

Congrats, I'm happy for ya, I hope that you get a lot of use & enjoyment from it.
If the weather is good there, take it for a spin. Glad you got it done.
Yeah, it was more than what I wanted to spend but this is my dream truck. I'm going to take this thing for a good drive and put a couple hundred miles on it this weekend.
Thanks again everyone for all of the different opinions. It helped me make the right decision for myself and think things out.
i keep puting $$$ into my old 68 camper special for 2 reasons : my dad was the original owner(lots of good memories) and second, every guy needs a pickup truck...just don' let others borrow to haul something. As for a previous comment about how cheap you can buy an old truck, find me one as nice as yours and I would pay $ 4000 to $5000 in a heart beat.

Non-tangible, virtual popcorn fresh out o' the proverbial pan...

And it makes you happy for way less than a new truck... ;-) (not knocking new trucks).
Reminds me of a quote on sport bike development, "I feel the new technology and improved speed and handling of my modern sportbike only serves to increase the velocity at which I'll eventually crash..." Lol.
Orich, are there any existing threads that address this topic?
Well yes & no it's been talked about over & over many time since I've been a member on the site..
May be this site should add a sticky about having a vehicle stolen like the pirate 4x4 site has.
And ways to make it more anti theft proof!! my 02 cents
