Pretty sure both have to be removed before removing and installing a head gasket.
What has lead you to replace the head gasket?
Inline Sixes have a very long head and warp, so what are your plans at this point?

Overheating
Checked head no war page or cracks but gasket had fail points, noticed water on fill cap
