Does the factory exhaust on a 1993 IDI 7.3L turbo diesel cause it to lose power due to restriction (which I'm sure it does as it is only 2.5"-3" in diameter), and how mush power would I gain if i were to put a 3" or 3.5" eaxhaust with a 4" tailpipe?
Also, does anyone sell a preformance chip for this year and engine? I have looked and have not been succesful in my search. If I were to find a chip, what else would need to be done? (i.e.-pyrometer, new tranny temp gauge).
Another thing, how can i reset the governor on my truck? The governors are located on the injectors. They control how much fuel is injected. Would it mea replacing them, modifying them or something else? And what are the factory maximum speeds set at.
INcreasing the size of the exhaust to 3 inch all the way back and also having mandrel bends in the pipe will help. Probably loosing the muffler would help gain some power. Besure the intake filter is allowing more air to flow into the engine too. The idi engines do NOT have a chip, so that is out. The pump is manually controlled by linkage from the foot pedal to the pump. A pyrometer will be a benefit so you can watch the heat produced by the burning of the fuel and thus prevent "meltdown". If I were you , I would take the truck to an injection shop and have the reset the fuel delivery rate for you. More is good , BUT too much is not better unless you know what you are doing. The "injectors" do not have a governor on the top of them. And what do you mean, factory maximum speeds?
The "governors" on 1993 IDI Turbo diesels are located on the injectors. They limit the amount of fuel that is given to the enjine. as you can see this is a problem sine i may only be going 50 when hauling, say, 13 tons of rock, yet i need more power to get up a hill. i have not found this to be a problem yet.
I agree with taking it to a ford certified dealer or, as you said, an injector shop and letting them reset the governors so nothing is messed up.
i mean a speed set by Ford as hte vehicles maximum speed that it can obtain.
Long Live TEXAS.
The injection pump controls the amount of fuel the engine gets. The injectors control the pressure. Have your pump calibrated and your injectors pop tested if you suspect injection problems.
No problems, just want power. I got an idea. I'm going to a junk yard and getting an old exhaust off of a military truck or school bus and cutting muine off with a cutting torch and welding the new one (old) on.
