I have an 09 with a v10. I'm thinking about making a front bumper for it. Something along the lines of an iron cross/n fab/etc. I'm still in the design stage...figured it would be a decent winter project. My question is regarding the bumper opening on my stock bumper. Is it used for aero or cooling? Will it even matter? What about the huge plastic air dam?
I googled it and looked at some pics. There is a couple that have cutouts in addition to light buckets. But I'm not sure what engine they are using. Thanks for the help
I know my 14 isn't exactly the same but the center hole in the bumper had a rubber flap attached to direct air through the radiator. When I built my bumper I kept the flap and attached it behind the winch and the open area around the winch flows plenty of air. Im glad to see you are thinking of the issues ahead of time. With good planning you'll end up with a nice bumper. As far as the cooling I really don't think it will make much difference. It was in the back of my head too. I checked the truck temps on my scanner before and after the bumper...exactly the same
As much as I'd like to think I could design and build a front bumper for my pickup, I'd hate to think the front bumper I built was the cause of injury or worst to myself or one of my passengers. Today, our trucks are designed with Air Bag sensors and Crumple Zones that are engineered to absorb the impacts of a crash. Of all the manufactures of aftermarket front bumpers, there a only a couple that have been tested and passed by the National Insurance Institute of Safety. For that reason I've used ARB front bumpers on all my Jeep YJ/TJ/JK's for the past 20 plus years.
Projectnitemare...thanks. It makes sense on the rubber flappy thing. Stufarmer...never thought about some of your comments. Thanks to you too. As I said, still in the design stage. Thought a little about the design as I was washing it today.

I thought about that before too. Very few aftermarket bumpers are tested. Kinda why I don't mind building my own bumpers. Why pay all that money when i can build exacty what i want for less than a third or the price. I'm not worried about air bags and such. Anything I build that flimsy factory bumper won't hold a candle to. Who knows where liability falls should you be in an accident whether you build a bumper or buy one. I tend to over build everything to take abuse, it's not going anywhere
