Cam Sensor Issue

Couple of questions....

What the easiest way to replace a cam sensor?? I'm thinking I should be able to just remove the air filter, and piping for me to get a socket in there....

My issue is that I'll drive for about 30 min or so and the truck will shut off while driving. I'll pull off the road, let it sit for 10 min or so and It will fire back up and go for another 20 min or so.

I hooked a scanner up to it and watched all my pressures, volts, etc. and everything seems perfect while idling and driving around. The only thing I can thing of is the cam sensor is screwed/getting warm and shutting me down... Yes i have done all of the upgrades to everything..

Any ideas??

Get some way to read live data so you'll know what the truck is doing when it shuts off.

If you have an android device, torque pro is available for less than $25.

I went in from under the truck, took less than 15 minutes, hardest part was finding it.

By the way, I went from above. Wasn't easy. I think I just had to pull the air filter box. It's a blind install by "feel". If its stuck, there's not much way to get leverage to pull hard. You just have to wiggle and coax it out while pulling as much a you can.

I am assuming it would throw a code when it goes bad.
What's the code #?

Replaced the cam sensor this morning and it didn't fix it. I'll update later after more tests.

To rule out cam and crank sensors, use a scan tool or ScanGaugeII and watch Sync when it shuts down. If it loses sync check crank sensor since you already did cam. One thing though with the cam sensor is it very well may be a harness chafe or oil disintegration of the insulation. Inspect the harness.
Also when it acts up monitor and record vitals. Pay attention to ICP pressure and volts, and IPR % while cranking. If while cranking the IPR% goes right upto 85% then you probably have an internal high pressure leak or pump (especially if it's older than 04.5).
Post results and the year of your truck and someone can help.

Ok. The engine needs over 500psi of high pressure oil pressure to start. When it acts up and you observe ICP pressure showing less than 500PSI and the IPR is around 85% then you most likely have a leak. It could be clogged IPR screen, dummy plugs, SCT fitting, and/or oil feed tubes, injector/oil rail cups to name a few. An air test can help identify the cause.
First get some readings and let us know.

Still chasing my tail....
So everything looks fine on a scanner but we did some things and still having the same problem.

-replaced both batteries
-flashed the ECU
-replaced the crank sensor

It died last night after replacing the crank sensor and then when trying to start it was having a glitch like issue. whatever the problem is, its electrical....

When it dies last night, did it still have cam/crank sync? If no sync, probably cam sensor or the wiring to it.

Replaced the cam sensor last week. I'm going to check all wiring this weekend, test light stuff and check fuses

It's a heat related and or electrical issue for sure. When its colder out, I can drive further and it restarts quicker. When it's hotter out I can't drive as far and takes twice as long to restart...

Go back to post #8 and post results. We need to know if it's losing high pressure oil pressure when it dies. Post ICP readings and IPR % while cranking.
