Not my batteries. During my career we set up vehicle data recording at commercial and transit fleet operations all over the country. Every so often we would either hear or sometime see exploded batteries. But if you search you can see that passenger cars and trucks have had issues too.
As lead acid batteries approach full charge they will out gas, but not to the extent where an explosion occurs. As part of our company EHS review program when it came to vehicle batteries it got to become an interesting discussion. Those who were less practical but very safety conscious would have written up the procedure that any recharging or handing of vehicle batteries would require us to be suited up like a bomb disposal tech. We were able to negotiate it down to face shield over safety glasses, long rubber gloves and a rubber apron. We lucked out on foot ware that the normal safety shoes were listed and not over boots. Since our building was not suited to having a battery room like so many of the transit sites we visited, battery recharging was done outdoors, outside of the rear door.
This sounds more and more like a bad voltage regulator in an alternator to me. Any update on the bench test yet?
When you re-install the batteries, go ahead and swap them between spots.
Bench test came back good at 15.1 he tested the alternator 4 times. Ran about a minute for each test. Took air cleaner out to get to DS negative ground cable. Cleaned and mounting additional ground from frame to block there.
I'll redo the passenger side tomorrow.
Switching batteries like you mentioned. I have a battery tender plus. So batteries will be charged correctly and ready to go.

Did you ever find a fix for this issue? I’m having the same problem.
