today i lost my oil pressure and it kept bouncing back from none to middle and my dad replaced the oil pump about 4 months ago. the engine was also making a loud noise. It is at the shop of the guy who replaced the oil pump. Anyone know what it is i dont want this guy to rip me off.
what kind of noise? did the engine die? what engine? when i spun my bearings the engine died and would not restart until i let it cool and put a new filter on it. that noise was a wet clunking. when my crank thrust bearings went out there was a loud screeching (flexplate rubbing back of engine) i can say that it does not sound good hope it is better than what it sounds. it is also possible that he did not get something tight on the pump.
If the gauge was bouncing from low to middle, it was the oil pressure switch opening/closing. There is a resistor in the wiring that fakes the gauge to the middle of its reading. The switch on the engine is a normally open switch that closes with oil pressure, sending juice thru the resistor to the gauge, reading in the middle no matter what the pressure. Your switch was opening/closing...

about the pressure, it would make sense to put a mechanical gauge in the place of the sending unit and get true readings. 10-15 at idle and 40-55 at cruise rpms would be adequate IMHO.

I would check everything thoroughly because of the loud noise you heard. Don't think just a bad sending unit would cause that. You could have been low on oil, or worse, could have a bad bearing. Keeping in mind that there must have been a previous problem, hence the new oil pump.
Winford Friday!
Its all right guys it was just some dirty oil that was clogging up my oil pump so the engine wasnt getting the oil it needed. Just needed some cleanup and some more frequent oil changes for awhile.
Good news! You are lucky to catch it in time. Although I know a guy who drove his Crown Vic around several days complaining about a knock in the engine. Finally had the dealer check it and it was totally out of oil. Whatever damage was done didn't keep him from driving it several months more (after adding some oil of course).

beware if the pump had just been replaced 3months ago i dont see how you have dirty oil to the point of clogging the pump. sounds a little fishy to me. glad you got your truck back and i wish you the best.
p.s. to me it sounds like B.S. almost sounds like there was a shop rag or paper towel left in the bottom of the oilpan and that is what clogged your pick-up just my thoughts (i tore a 350 down once and it had been driven for six months with a paper towel in the oil gallie under the intake) my two cents and nothing more.........
