Stuck in high idle

I have a 95 F-150 2WD w/5.8 fuel injected, automatic (135,000 mi). My problem started about a month ago. The darn thing after running it about 10 minutes acts like it kicks into high idle. It will not idle down like a carb fueled engine just stays screaming. When the truck is shut off for about 5 min it goes back to normal idle. I may be imagining this but it seems to occur after running down a long grade under no throttle (engine braking if you will). I imagine I have something wore out (sensor?) due to all the miles but I have no idea where to start. Too cheap to take to dealer and put on computer. EGR? exhaust? anything?

Stuck in high idle

Just some additional info...When running around town this never occurs. Only when I make my 30 mile drive to work and hit that grade in and out of there. I've searched threads and have read quite a bit of others same problem and I am leaning toward the vacuum option. It just boggles me that it only happens at certain times and goes away after the truck is turned off. HELP!!!

Pull the codes from the computer. A manual will help you do this if you can, I am not sure how it is done on that year of truck. If that doesn't show anything then it is most likely a vac. leak somewhere like on the brake booster valve, cracked hose or broken line, idle air control valve could have something to do with it, may not hurt to clean that. I would try to check all the vac. lines, if they look good then the throttle body and upper intake gasket would be my next thing to check. It may just be a sensor, pulling the codes is the first place to start for sure.

This thread tells how to pull codes from EEC-IV computers ('84-95 EFI trucks) with a paperclip, and there's a link to the full code list.

Your IAC (idle air control) solenoid is sticking, and you'll probably find that it needs to be replaced, but read that thread, buy a Haynes manual & a multimeter, test the IAC, and THEN decide if it needs to be replaced. You can clean it with carb cleaner and you might get a few more miles out of it, but it won't last much longer.

I cleaned out the IAC and checked all my vac lines and gaskets on the manifold, etc.. Will put er to the test today. Thanks for the precise information.
