engine ID

Hey guys !!!
Just bought a 1980 F250 ext.cab 4x4 & the vin says it came w/ a 400 ci , however the guy said it has a 1975 460 in it. Did a search on engine ID & it pulled up nothing. Was hoping somebody could help me out w/ where to look for the casting #'s on the block & heads. What would actually distinguish it as a 460 when it looks like all the codes are "family" oriented ? Thanks,

.............Paul

engine ID

Two easy clues:
1. Number of valve cover bolts, and
2. Location of the thermostat housing.

The 460 has 7 valve cover bolts. The 351M/400 has 8 valve cover bolts.

The 460 thermostat housing is on the front of the intake manifold. The 351M/400 thermostat housing is on the block, in front of the intake manifold.

Block casting ID codes for both engine types are located on the right (passenger) side of the block, toward the rear, often hidden above or behind the starter.
