Hello!
I have a '93 Explorer that lately has been suffering the following problems:
warning lights will go on (sporadically) but only after running for a while (the vehicle is used to haul pallets)
Vehicle starts to blow black smoke from tailpipe
Idling seems fine but engine revs sporadically without pushing on the gas pedal.
The first thought was "there's an issue with the fuel pump/filter"
Checked the air filter (vehicle also went cross-country for 7K miles)
Not sure where to start at this point. I'd like to check everything that we can physically fix before we ultimately resort to the computer system. Has anyone reset the computer in their vehicle via unhooking the battery?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I really wanted to have my business partner ask the question in the forum but there's a small emergency he needed to take care of and I'd like to get started on something in the mean time.
Which warning lights are coming on?
Before you clear the computer, pull the trouble codes. You can do so yourself with a piece of wire and a $3 voltmeter or using the check engine light. Instructions for pulling codes are give in any good repair manual and in several places on the net (my favorite is www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html).
Nope not yet but I will pass the information on! BTW - anyone know what would cause the vehicle to go in reverse but not in drive? Yeh, more problems are cropping up. dang it!
and locate the vacuum line to it. On a regulator this age, the FPR can leak fuel directly into the manifold. Occasional black smoke can be a tip off of this.
Have you checked tthe transmission fluid level lately? The vacuum modulator on the tranny can also leak at this age and suck fluid into the vacuum tree. This could also cause smoke. Have you checked forward in all different gears? If all forward gears have problems it can be the forward clutch or one of the two one way clutches.
Well, so far we've replaced the spark plugs, took a look at the tranny, cleaned out the tranny filter and are now going to go through some other quick steps. So here's another question - anyone have to replace/install a PCM in an Explorer? We're starting to wonder if this would have anything to do with all the problems we're facing. Are we speculating too big? Anything we might easily overlook? Would the PCV valves create any problems if faulty and if so what would we look/listen for? Please understand - the "mechanic" is under the vehicle - I'm just the messenger
Well, after getting the tranny pulled and looking through what manauals we were able to find locally the house-mechanic is stumped. Everyone has said that the A4LD is one of the easiest to fix but aside from removing the pan he's not sure where to go from there. We've checked all the places around here for a more detailed manual but no luck and rather than order and wait, we'd like to get moving on this project. Does anyone know where we can download or find a assembly diagram for this particular transmission ('93 Ford Explorer). Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Okay, well, after dealing with the vehicle not going in to drive much less engaging any gear - the vacuume modulator was replaced and that got the tires moving when testing out the gears. The problem now is that we're not getting the umph! needed to drive - in other words the vehicle looks like its handling the shifting just fine but that's about it. Not much oil pressure so not sure what we can do look in to that to see if that's what's causing problems.
Any help would be greatly appreicated. We're trying to diagnose and fix whatever crops up next. This is all very frustrating!
