Some states get a little goofy with the Non CDL, Commercial Driver class (10,001-26,000GVW). It doesn't take much to get over the 10,001 GVW mark. Not typically a problem as you are typically not driving for a commercial enterprise. However, there are those DOT folks out there that interpret the law a little differently. I have heard of instances where it has been interpreted that if you collect any type of award monies then it can be considered a commercial enterprise.
I think it al comes down to the respective officer who decides to flex the long arm of the law.
I know in Pa. if you have a CDL and don't renew your medical card before it expires the state will pull your license and you have to take the entire driving test again to get it back.

Tennessee started that last year also. I've had my Class A in NY since 1973, but stopped driving all together about 1990. I stopped doing the physicals after that, but when I moved to TN. in 2005 I had to get one when I changed my license over. Then I had to get one each time I renewed, last year the state sent me a notice that my health card expired and they would pull my license if I didn't get another. After paying $100 to get a new card I found out that since I take blood pressure medicine, they only approve my card for one year at a time now. Looks like I'll be giving it up next year.
Briefly looking the list over....it looks like, in some states, a tag-a-long trailer could be classified as a semi-trailer. In that some of the trailers weight is transferred to the towing vehicle via the tongue weight on the hitch.
When I tow my compact backhoe from NY to VA and back, I carry a copy of the DOT regs. The backhoe is light enough so that it can be tied down like a car.
