Oil Leak! Help!

I was under my truck trying to change the neg. ground cable and i saw that my truck is leaking major oil around the oil pan. It looks like it had been doing it for a while because the transmission is coated and i thought the power stearing pump was leaking because every thing was oily and dirty but i think that the engine fan blew all of the leaking oil to the top of the engine. What i am getting at is how hard is it to change the oil pan gasket?

Oil Leak! Help!

No fun, from what I gather you have to undo engine mounts and jack up motor.

Oil Leak! Help!

the good news is they sell a felpro permatex gasket for your 300 straight six. whick comes with clips to hold in place while the oil pan slides over them and on to block. Plus it is a dry gasket ( no silicon slide. THey are the only thing i could do to stop my oil pan from leaking. The gasket will fit any year of 300 i6 well i know for sure at least back to 70's not sure about 60's. However you do have to order the gasket for a late 80's or it won't even come up on the parts screen. (weird hugh)

good luck

Oil Leak! Help!

I don't know if it will work on the 300 but on the 302 and 351 I can replace the gasket without lifting the engine.I am able to unbolt the pan and let it rest on the crossmember.Stretch the old gasket around the outside of the pan.Clean the mating surfaces and stretch the new gasket around the pan.It will only work if you use the felpro or other neoprene gasket.I have yet to try it on my 88 Bronco but plan on doing it when I replace the junk Mazda trans.Good luck.

Oil Leak! Help!

I did this job on my 89 F-150 without having to jack up the engine. It is a bear of a job. You cannot completly remove the pan and will have a limited room to move it. The replacement gasket had four blue plastic guides that screwed into the block. These allowed the pan to be positioned and held in place with a small gap between it and the block. Working alone took hours with many attempts. The nasty condition under a leaky engine is a big factor. If I ever attempt this again, a good cleaning prior to starting will be a plus. I also replaced the oil and filter righ after as I'm sure stuff dropped into the pan. It worked, but I hope never to do it again.

You may want to take it to a shop. Let a pro do the work if you don't have alot of tools. I would change the pan also, if there is any rust on it. I would change the oil pump too if the truck has over 100,000 mile on it. Don't let a good engine down, keep her tight and topped off with oil.

Oil Leak! Help!

Hey I just put the front section of the pan gasket in my 86 4x4 F-150 300 a few weeks ago. It was the only section leaking. I would have never been able to slip that pan out of there, but it comes down about 3inchs all around and it's a 4 piece gasket, you could probably slip it in. I got 200K on my original oil pump and it barely makes the N on NORMAL I've dumped 2 quarts of 20W-50 in with my 10W-30, 7 quart engine as you all know. Anyway the oil pressure goes up to the middle for a few minutes then goes back to right below the N.
