My '70 F250 is a 4x4 and has power-nothing except the engine. The steering box (not sure I'm using this name correctly) has a rubber seal of some type that is falling apart. It has a giant hole in it. Is this something I can/should replace? -thanks everyone
I'm having a little trouble visualizing what you are talking about. Could it be you are looking at the boot on the drag link where it goes into the steering arm.
If it's any type of seal that's falling apart I'd imagine it's time to replace it before any damage occurs. Can you take a picture of it? Not sure exactly which seal your referring to so a pic could help us help you.
That rubber seal on the bell lower end of the slip coupler on the mid shaft can be had and replace by using the early jeeps Boot. Jeffs bronco's grave yard has them. But the small end needs to be re-shaped to fit the round ford shaft.
Get the rebuild kit help reduce steering play.
Also the side box adjustment screw with the luck nut can be adjusted but don't over tighten that.
Adjust while tires our straight and test drive after each time you make any adjustments to the box.
I use a small 1/2" sanding drum with my Dremel hand tool to grind out the rubber.
If you don't do this , It's a real B-ch to get it on to the shaft with the end Tee cross bar shaft
I'm sure you can get it at any jeep dealer this fits like the 80's cj5 or cj7
A 4x4 box does not use a rag joint. Only 2wd's use a rag joint in there steering systems.is it a slip joint your meaning on the steering shaft between the box and column?
