I am in the process of trying to get a Federal job with the new Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Just wondering if anyone else works for the federal, state, or local government.
Based on observations during my time in the Army, prepare yourself to be frustrated many times over if you're at all concientious about your job. The government employment "system" is not designed to reward competence no matter what anyone tells you. If you're a pretty fair b***kisser you should do all right.
With exception of our Armed Forces, which I hold in the highest esteem and am extremely grateful for, my opinion is that government and public workers do less work for more pay, benefits, and vacation than any other group in our nation - and the rest of us are paying for it.
Nope not me.
I work for a non-profit organization. So we get them tax-exempt plates like some city cars have. Thats as close as I get. Unless I was jesse ventura I probably wouldn't atmit to working for the govt.

You are correct in saying that. There are a few however that take their job seriously and honestly try to be ethical while making sure the taxpayer gets a return for their money. It is frustrating to watch people who think the job is owed them and don't seem to care that somebody had money taken away from them so they can lie around all day doing crap.
I've worked hard for my money and I damn well should. I realize that it came from people who have less then me.
I am a Federal worker and the saying "Good enough for goverment work" doesn't wash with me.
My wife works for a branch of the goverment. She is over seen by HUD. She helps find low income housing for those of us that can't pay retail! The stories I have heard. It's no wonder the country is going down the tubes. I just can't imagine working so hard to not work because of some so called excuse. And they all multiply like rabbits If this doesn't change soon there will be no one to support them.
I live in Oklahoma. Here the local legislators' jobs are supposed to be a part-time position and ideally, their staff would only be as big as necessary. (To give you an idea, Texas and Arkansas pay equivalent legislator positions between 6 and 10 grand per year.) This insane state pays a minimum of 40 grand per year and up to 90 grand for some positions. (Teachers, police and firemen on the other hand make less than 30 grand.) This does not include staffing multiple offices with people who do nothing nor perks such as free dining, telephone and utility services or reembursments of travel expenses. In this state, the only way to make any real money is to steal it, be born into it or run for public office. Sales taxes are 8-10% and we have one of the highest income tax per capita rates in the country while having the 44th worse education system in the nation. They recently had a scandal where government employees were paid for jobs that didn't exist; contractors to the state were over-charging trucking companies on taxes while pocketing over 50% of the taxes collected and nursing home managment/owners were paying off officials to look the other way over health care violations. We have toll roads that have made enough money to pay themselves off several times over, yet we still owe over 100 million dollars on them.
I feel sorry for a government worker who really tries to "give a dollar's worth of work for a dollar's pay" in this state. They usually don't last long.
Funny you should post this. I was actually offered a job with the federal government recently, and I'm still deciding whether or not to accept it (they pay less).
I probably wouldn't even have considered it a few years ago, but I'd really like to work for an organization that isn't going to go chapter 11 out from under me (anyone want to hazard any guesses who I work for now?) Plus, the benefits are amazing. they pay to further your education (which all *smart* companies do) and offer a whole raft of other perks.
I get a little tired of hearing all the government employee bashing.
I spent 30 years in private industry, and now have a full time position with state government. My position pays thousands less than a comparable position in private industry, although the vacation and health care benefits are good. I took this job because I was tired of traveling and constantly being sent out of state for training, etc. I am happy with this job, but the "Lazy" state worker jokes irritate me. Of course, there are some in gov. jobs who do just what they have to and no more, but this happens everywhere, even in private industry.
I work hard for my pay, as do most of my fellow state employees. If you knew how low paid those snow plow drivers and pot-hole fillers are, you might think twice about bashing them.
For myself, I'm proud of what I do. Like the saying goes: Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in my shoes.
OK. I'm down off my soapbox.

I know government workers that work very hard, and I know workers at DMV that PURPOSELY **** off the public, and enjoy doing it. I'm not kidding. Unfortunately, the bad ones are the hardest to get rid of. There is a saying that if you're boss is a real jerk, don't worry because he'll be promoted out of the way, and this is true in most cases that I've seen. My cousin recently quit working for Immigration because she says the immigrants tell YOU what to do, and arrive with prepared lawsuits if they don't get their way. The bosses are afraid for their jobs, so they give in. She just couldn't stand it anymore. My wife works for the Navy, as did I. I would say for the most part that the civilian workers are doing a good job.
I was never a government employee but I worked for 3 years fixing computers in an Air Traffic Control Center. I have never met any people more competent and professional than the Air Traffic Controllers I worked with there. They earn every nickle and perk they get.

Well I'm glad to see there are some good posts here, rather than the normal government bashing.
I'm still waiting for my chance to go through my assessment so that I can be offered a job. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) has chosen to assess those who are currently security screeners last. I will hopefully get my chance in the next week or so. I will post my progress.
