I hope a legit LEO seeing you doing your game is forgiving, it's a felony.

as for people slowing down for even thinking there's a chance of getting pulled over, I find it funny as hell. Way I look at it, if I slow down, the cop/hwy patrol/whatever will know I know I was speeding and saw them. If I just keep going, most of the time they leave me be. I'm the guy that passes the cops with the cruise set at 8 mph over the limit. Lol
I'm the same way and share the same mindset. Unless I'm seriously booking it, I just maintain and coast down a little bit. If I'm really in the wrong and I get caught, well I had it coming anyway.

What I cannot STAND are the people that refuse to pass a LEO period. Massive traffic stack up because nobody wants to pass the police car that's doing 55 in a 60. I'll set cruise and roll past maybe 5mph over the speed limit. The only time I've ever gotten crap for it was when I had just put the 35's on and forgot they would throw off the speedo. Luckily the LEO was understanding when I showed him the receipt from Discount Tire that was less than 30 minutes old.

Dr. Killjoy here...

While I understand what you're getting at, that law applies more towards running around with cherries and berries messing with people. I hardly think it'll stick if you just pull out and goose it behind somebody. That's a daily practice in Houston and indeed anywhere there's a county road with drivers that understand that merging and getting up to speed quickly is important.

There's zero proof, probable cause, or even reasonable suspicion for a LEO to even contemplate charging someone with impersonating a LEO just because they parked in the center median.

There's no way to prove intent or any elements of the crime.

"pulled over behind the guy and followed him as his speed slowly dropped to 60. I followed him closely at ten under the speed limit for a few miles until my exit came up and passed him. He wasn't happy."

Again, get caught doing this = felony. End of discussion.

Interesting that this thread has the term "trolling" in it's title.

FYI @Pastor Ex, the moderator is former LEO.

But then again, I try not to pass judgment.

So if I follow a guy and he slows down to 10 under the posted speed limit and then I continue to follow him they are going to take my car away and lock me up or shoot me!?

Sorry all, perhaps I was not looking at the scene correctly.
I thought I understood that the OP , with an official looking veh was parked in an official veh only location, then engaged in a pursuit of his wife and others - hence the following closely of xx veh .

Sorry if I misread the issue. I will bow out

I think you got the gist of what ended up happening, however, if there were no flashing lights involved, no threats, not active intimidations or trying to get a car to pull over, then there would be no laws broken. If someone decides to think that they are a LEO and they slowdown accordingly, that is their choice. Even if they were to freak out and call 911 and officers were to respond, there would be little to no evidence of any wrong doing.

Honestly, things like this happen often when a driver thinks a LEO is behind them. However, no law is broken unless someone is trying to emulate a LEO and is pulling people over or otherwise trying to enforce laws they have no authority over.

Using a highway cross-over is not only illegal here, it is very dangerous, and very foolish (I'm being as polite as I can here, as I don't want to be viewed as a party pooper). I find it hard to believe it's not illegal in every state.

Well, based on your posts, it would appear you saw it the same way I did, you just had the wrong conclusion.

I tried to explain, in the above scenario and situation, there are no provable elements to the crime of impersonating a LEO. Sometimes it's difficult for the layperson to understand when elements of a crime are present and when they aren't. No biggie, but when you kept arguing with such forcefulness....well, hey, it's all cleared up now and that's what matters.

So how "illegal" is it for someone to use that dirt strip between the highway that somehow I have no idea how to drive on? And yes I do understand the reasoning for it. If everyone used it all the time it would get dangerous.

In no way was I impersonating a LEO.

I did not display flashing red or blue lights.
I did not utilise a public address system or motion for the car to pull over.
I did not attempt to initiate a traffic stop or detain anyone.

The police don't even use Excursions up here. The people who buy the retired P71 Crown Vics at auctions look more legit than I do.

My crimes would be limited to:
Failure to obey a highway sign
Speeding
Following too closely

All misdemeanors/prepayable traffic infractions.

Additionally, following too closely would be hard to prove. No collision occurred and tailgating is frequent in the Washington DC suburbs.
Speeding was limited to how long it took me to catch up with traffic and then match the flow of traffic.
And there are legitimate reasons to pull over to the side of the road; mechanical difficulty, use of electronic devices, etc.
