I have a 2003 Expedition 4wd with about 145K miles. I've noticed that occasionally, I feel a vibration like I'm going over a rumble strip. Usually happens when I'm near the beginning of a trip. Also have had some occasional times when the car roughly downshifts when I let off on the gas. Any ideas?
It doesn't feel like the engine to me. Almost like I'm going over a very rough road. Not quite sure but sometimes it seems like it happens when I hit a bump.

That all sounds like mechanical transmission trouble to me. You might want to swing it into a tranny shop and ask them while it's still drivable. Once you have to tow it you're going to be limited as to where you can take it.

I wouldn't expect it to downshift if "letting off" on the throttle, but up shifting to OD. Many have experienced that feeling when the tranny shifts from 3rd to OD, when the torque converter lock up doesn't positively lock in.
I know many don't believe in additives but Lucas Tranny additive did the trick for me, although it took a few days.

It may not be a true gear change downshift. Depending on the speed it happens the PCM my just be unlocking the torque converter to keep the engine from lugging.
Brought the truck to a local independent transmission shop that a mechanic recommended. They tested it with a reader and couldn't get it to act up. He was going to change the fluid and add an additive for shudder issues that I Ok'd but then decided to drive test drive it again to pick up some parts. While driving he said he felt the aggressive lunge that I reported when going about 40 MPH . He wasn't sure but said it could be an engine miss too. Unfortunately there was no instrumentation hooked up this time. He's going to keep it into next week to see if he can capture the issue with the reader hooked up. He didn't get the shutter which was another problem I reported.
At least someone else has felt part of the problem. I'll let everyone know what he finds out.
Transmission shop could not reproduce the problem a second time. They test drove about 40 miles. They changed the fluid and added an additive. They said based on the metal in the pan and the fluid it was the first change.
I drove it about 500 miles - one long trip from CT to DE and back and then a couple shorter ones. No sign of the issue. Seems like fluid change did the trick.
Problem update. Driving down the road the other day had another harsh clunk. Felt like it was when shifting into overdrive but not 100% sure since I wasn't looking at the tach. Oh well - will live with it unless it gets a lot worse. At least I know there is nothing wrong that is diagnosable and all the fluids are fresh.
